Walter Carl Brinkman

Walter Carl Brinkman, 93, passed away at Baptist Health Floyd in New Albany, Indiana on August 23, 2021, after a brief illness.  He was born on August 21, 1928, in New Minden, Illinois to the late Walter Sr. and Emilia (Unverfehrt) Brinkman.  He served in the Army with the 76th Engineer Construction Battalion during the Korean War.  He spent many years driving a truck making local deliveries, for Centralia Cartage and ATL.

Walter was a lifelong member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in New Minden, where he served on many different committees and offices over the years.  He married Emily Engele on June 6, 1954.  They were married for nearly 52 years before she preceded him in death. 

Walter loved his family, and enjoyed golfing, traveling and woodworking, having had a stand at the Fall Festival for many years.  He was a big fan of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Survivors include his three children:  Gloria Greer (Charlie) of Carbondale, Illinois, Doug Brinkman of Nashville, Illinois and Pam Shelton (Pat) of Floyds Knobs, Indiana; five grandchildren:  Jordan (Darya), Dustin (Katie), and Josh Brinkman, Casey Shelton and Sydney (Paul) Gemperlein, and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Virgil Brinkman and sister, Alice Eigenrauch.

The family would like to thank his caregivers at Azalea Hills and Autumn Woods in Indiana for their loving care.

 Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 28, 2021 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in New Minden with Rev. Timothy Mueller officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  Friends may call from 9:00 to 10:45 a.m. on Saturday at the church.  Styninger Funeral Home in Nashville is in charge of arrangements Memorial contributions may be made to the St. John’s Lutheran Church or a charity of the donor's choice.
