Steven Spenner Obituary

Steven Ray Spenner, 67, of rural Nashville peacefully departed this earthly life on the afternoon of Friday the 13th at  SSM Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon following lengthy and complicated illness. He leaves behind his devoted wife of forty-two years Cindy, two daughters Erin Zepp of Springfield and Emily Maloy of Big Rapids, Michigan, five grandchildren (Ben, Katie & Anni Zepp and Brienne & Mina Maloy), and three sons-in-law named Kevin (Brown, Maloy, and Zepp). Also left to mourn his passing are his mother, Elaine Spenner of Hoyleton, sister Diane (Tony) Guinzy, sister Sandy (Allen) Martin and numerous family members and friends. His daughter Katie Rose Brown and father Butch Spenner went on to heaven before him and we trust that they are all enjoying health and happiness in paradise.

Steve was a kind man and a loyal friend. His love for his family, his friends, and his farm was steady and unwavering. It played out in thousands of acts of service over his nearly seven decades of life.  Whether he was checking the oil in your car when you were already ten minutes late, lending you shed space, tools, and expertise to fix a broken engine, warming your boots on the heat register on a freezing winter morning, or giving you a tremendous and enveloping hug, Steve’s love was felt more often than it was stated. Above all else Steve was a patient and thoughtful listener. He may have had selective hearing, but he always selected the most important things.

Although he retired some years ago due to his declining health, if you asked him about himself he would have said he was a farmer.  Those of us who love him best would probably describe him a bit differently.  He was a farmer, of course, and took pride in preparing the soil and tending the seeds he planted before taking in a harvest, but more than that he was a steward of the several dozen acres of Washington County farm and timber land that were entrusted to his care. He knew every square inch of his land and cared deeply for it and all the creatures, great and small, that called it home.

Although we mourn his passing, we rejoice in the promise of heaven and look forward to a joyful reunion someday. His memorial service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hoffman on Saturday, February 21, 2026 at 11am.  A memorial gathering of family and friends will be held prior to the service starting at 9:30am. Memorial contributions may be made to Washington County Senior Services Meals on Wheels Program.  Styninger Funeral Home in Nashville is in charge of arrangements.  Online expressions of sympathy may also be made on the funeral homes Facebook page.
