Joan Hastings Obituary

Joan Hastings, 83 of Nashville, formerly of Mattoon, passed away at 10:29 a.m. on Tuesday, December 10, 2019 at Washington County Hospital in Nashville.  She was born on April 1, 1936 in Decatur, the daughter of Carl T. And Evon Siddens Craft.  She married her high school sweetheart Jerry L. Hastings on June 25, 1955 in Elwin and he passed away on March 8, 2008.  Besides her husband of 52 years, she was also preceded in death by her parents, a sister Glenda Owens and her husband Phil and a sister in law Jean Honeyman.  Left to mourn her passing are 2 sons; Dr. Brian (Wendy) Hastings and Barry (Michelle) Hastings both of Mattoon. 2 daughters; Lana (Phil) Piercy of Bloomington and Becky (Mark) Styninger of Nashville.  A brother Carl (Joyce) Craft, Jr. of Elwin. 9 grandchildren; Ryan Hastings, Dr. Myles (Molly) Hastings, Blake Hastings, Michael (Samantha) Modos, Christopher (Bethany) Modos, Lauren (Trevor) Dennewitz, Brock (Roxzen) Styninger, Bryce Styninger and Bridget Styninger.  7 great grandchildren and 2 sister in laws; Joan Hoyt of Litetz, PA and Judy (Bill) Lovins of Springfield, MO.

Joan was a 1954 graduate of Macon High School and worked as a bank secretary before beginning her life as a wife and mother.  She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mattoon where she was active in the Asbury Sunday School class, the Joyful Singers and United Methodist Women.  In 1992, she became certified as a Stephens Ministry Lay Leader.  She was a member of P.E.O. in Mattoon and volunteered at the Mattoon Food Bank.   Joan was very artistic and enjoyed painting.  She enjoyed traveling with her husband and especially spending time at their Florida home.  Most of all, she loved her Lord and spending time with her family and going to all of her children and grandchildren’s activities and sporting events.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 14, 2019 at the First United Methodist Church in Mattoon with Rev. Ron Dickinson officiating.  Burial will follow in the Dodge Grove Cemetery in Mattoon.  Visitation will be held  from 11:00 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. on Saturday at the church.  Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church or Food bank both in Mattoon. Styninger Funeral Home in Nashville is in charge of arrangements.
