David Kastrup Obituary

David Walter Kastrup, 84, of St. Charles, Missouri, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at SSM Health St. Joseph Hospital. Born in Ferguson, Missouri on July 19, 1941, he was the son of Walter and Luela Kastrup.

David grew up in Nashville, Illinois, where he spent countless hours outdoors fishing, exploring, and reflecting on nature. There wasn’t a tree he couldn’t name, and this early connection to the outdoors became a lifelong source of joy and inspiration.

After his family returned to Missouri, he graduated from Ritenour High School with the class of 1959.

Following high school, he proudly served in the U.S. Navy until receiving his Honorable Discharge in 1963.  Later that same year, on July 7th, he married his high‑school sweetheart, Gladys Unverfehrt, who preceded him in death on October 24, 2019.

After completing his military service, David continued his education and earned his teaching degree from Long Beach State, California, in 1966.  His love of writing and language led him to a career as an English teacher at Hazelwood Central High School, where he taught until his retirement in 1992. Creative writing was his favorite subject, and he was known for the imaginative ways he encouraged students to express themselves. Many stayed in touch long after graduation, writing to thank him for the impact he had on their lives.

Tennis was another lifelong passion. David played whenever he could, coached the high school team, and formed many of his closest friendships on the court. These friendships extended well beyond tennis, leading to years of camping, hiking, and later bicycling together. He continued cycling throughout his life and enjoyed his final ride just a few weeks before his passing.

David was also an accomplished woodworker. Over the years he crafted clocks, furniture, and handmade games—thoughtful pieces that reflected both skill and creativity.

A gifted teacher in every sense, David shared knowledge naturally and generously. His curiosity, creativity, and kindness touched countless lives, both in and beyond the classroom.

He is survived by his two sons: Daniel (Rose) Kastrup of Ste. Genevieve, Missouri, and Andrew (Tracy) Kastrup of St. Charles, Missouri. He was the proud grandfather of three grandchildren: Megan (Chris) Calkins of Lake Lotawana, Missouri; Colton Kastrup of Portland, Oregon; and Amelia Kastrup of St. Charles, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his wife Gladys, his parents, and his sister, Jeanine Busby.

David’s legacy lives on in the many people he inspired, taught, and loved throughout his long, meaningful life. He will be deeply missed.

Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, February 20th at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Hoyleton with Rev. Nathan Wollenberg officiating.  A meal and time of sharing will follow in the church fellowship hall.  Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Research.  Styninger Funeral & Cremation Chapel in Hoyleton is in charge of arrangements.
