Bernice I. Wessel, 82 of rural Centralia, passed away at 3:58 p.m. on Monday, May 4, 2020 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in O’Fallon. She was born on February 26, 1938 in Washington County, the daughter of Arthur and Irene Unverfehrt Reitemeier. She married Howard Wessel on July 9, 1955 in Hoyleton and he passed away on June 15, 2001. Also preceding her in death were her parents and 2 sisters; Lois Schorfheide and Ruth Ann in infancy, along with a son in law David Wilbur. Left to mourn her passing is a son; Ron Wessel of Centralia. 3 daughters; Ruth Wilbur of Lynn Haven, FL, Janet (Rev. Michael) Kumm of Dakota Dunes, SD and Karen (Brian) Dieckmann of Carlyle. A sister; Marilyn Reitemeier of Nashville. 8 grandchildren; Tabitha, Steven, Jennifer, Gary, Jamie, Laura, Ashley and Travis. 9 great grandchildren and a brother in law Ron Schorfheide of Nashville.
Bernice was a farm wife and retired as the Assistant Chef at the Centralia Elks Lodge. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hoffman and enjoyed gardening and spending time with her grandkids.
A private graveside service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Hoffman with Rev.’s Mark Hofferber and Michael Kumm officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church in Hoffman. Styninger Funeral & Cremation Chapel in Hoyleton is in charge of arrangements. Since a public visitation is not possible due to the Governor’s executive order on group assemblies, expressions of sympathy are encouraged and may be left on the tribute page of Bernice’s obituary at www.styningerfuneralhomes.com or on the funeral homes Facebook page.
